It’s the most romantic time of the year again – Valentine’s Day! Love should be in the air, but is it on social media?
Amongst the things trending on Twitter today are ‘If Cupid Was’, ‘Happy Valentine’s Day’ and ‘Relationships End Because’. Not so loving, right? In the build-up to 14th February, there have been plenty of criticisms of ‘the most romantic day of the year’, but what we wanted to know is who dislikes Valentines the most – males or females?
Instantly, many would think single females have the most hatred for Valentine’s Day. But according to NM Incite’s social analytics of 70,000 tweets, only one-tenth of men’s tweets were positive compared with one-fifth of women’s. On the 10th February, 23% of male tweets were negative towards Valentine’s Day whilst 11% of female tweets were negative. However, although men are found to be more negative, women are still discussing the holiday more than men.
The amount of people on social media platforms is growing, so what new and exciting aspects does it have to offer this Valentine’s Day?
1. Typing an algebraic equation into Google will bring a surprise to your screen (in a heart-felt way of course!)
2. Cards based on Facebook, Twitter, QR codes and iPhones – who said romance was dead?
3. Starbucks have launched Cup Magic iPhone. Cups are printed with a love heart and once the cup is put within your phone’s field of vision, your phone will display images of heart-shaped flower petals flying off the cup. This can then be sent to your beloved via email or Facebook.
4. If you are using the day to propose to your loved one, social media can even play a part in that! Timothy Tiah Ewe Tia proposed to his long-term girlfriend in a way that would have been impossible for previous generations. Through the use of memes on card, Timothy proposed to his girlfriend through a restaurant window.
5. And for those of you have forgotten to buy something altogether, Lovestagram allows you to create a last-minute online gift with you and your loved ones shared photos on a slide show.
So whether you love technology or if you just plain forgot about Valentine’s Day, social media has something to offer for everyone.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
